"The California Natural Resources Agency, together with state agency partners, released a draft Natural and Working Lands Climate Smart Strategy that will guide and accelerate climate action across key California landscapes.
...The draft Natural and Working Lands Climate Smart Strategy responds directly to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Executive Order N-82-20 on nature-based solutions, which identified our natural and working lands as a critical yet currently underutilized sector in the fight against climate change.
...For more information on the Executive Order and the drafted Strategy, visit the state’s website devoted to accelerating nature-based solutions."
'Tis the season, and who knows for how long with the recent freezing temps, so be sure to get your leaf peeping in now! The colors have been spectacular thus far!

...Shuttle and rental car services from Bishop to Mammoth Lakes will be available to visitors on each flight. Drive time from Bishop to Mammoth Lakes is about 45 minutes and with free and regular bus service throughout Mammoth Lakes, it’s easy to get around town without a car.

Sherwins Meadow Grooming Pilot Approved

The Mammoth Ranger District has approved the continuation of a pilot program to provide a groomed trail this winter in the Sherwins Meadow area. The 1.2 miles of trail begins at the Sherwins Trailhead off Sherwin Creek Road. The groomed winter trail will be 8-12 feet wide providing space for a Nordic track, skate skiers, snowshoers, winter fat-bikes and walkers. (A minimum of 12 inches of snow is required for grooming operations.)

Acting District Ranger Leeann Murphy anticipates "The second year of this pilot project will provide valuable information to the Inyo National Forest in their future planning efforts for Subpart C of the Travel Management Rule (also known as areas designated for snowmobile use). Public use along this groomed trail in this location will provide information on: 1) the amount of use by the public in this area; 2) the type of use (motorized or non-motorized) that may occur in this area; 3) the potential connections between uses and private lands in this area; and 4) the potential to develop future groomed trails in the Sherwin area."

Go Trails!

Thanks to all who participated in the

Fall 2021 Mammoth Trails Community Meeting!

Mammoth Trails is a forum for all trail users to come together to engage with trails and public access issues and events; provide outdoor recreation amenity information; serve as a volunteer resource for stewardship; and enhance and protect outdoor recreation, foster strong relationships between user groups; and increase awareness and understanding of multiple uses.

The October 5th meeting focused on the highlights and accomplishments from the 2021 Summer Season on the Mammoth Lakes Trail System and what lies ahead for Fall and Winter.

We were also able to unveil a new Eastern Sierra Winter Recreation map which will be available for download soon! Funded in part through a CA State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division grant, Mammoth Lakes Recreation was able to work with Mammoth Lakes Trails & Public Access Foundation, Mammoth Lakes Trail System, Eastern Sierra Sustainable Recreation Coordinator and Inyo National Forest to digitally re-engineer the existing map and make updates! The meeting allowed us to highlight the educational components of the map and review winter recreation etiquette. We were joined by Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center and long-time OSV-enthusiast Mayor Bill Sauser to discuss winter recreation resources and improvements to infrastructure this year.

Forest Treatment Areas Slow Caldor Fire

Forest News Fire
In this latest edition of "Forest News", U.S.Forest Service Communications Specialist Joe Flannery, explains what a fuel treatment area is and how it can slow the spread of wildfire and save communities. Two specific fuel treatment areas are highlighted that slowed progress of the Caldor Fire.

Closer to home, the Eastern Sierra Communities and Climate Resilience team will be meeting this week to discuss the multi-year project which will use landscape scale forest restoration and strategic prescribed fire to return natural processes to forest landscapes surrounding Mammoth Lakes.
