FIRE
The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) is the nation’s support center for wildland fires and other emergency situations. Maps for current large fires and fire potential outlook maps for the next four months can be easily downloaded.

Local Road and MUP Rehab 2021 STIP PLANS_Page_01
Mammoth Lakes Town Council awarded a $2.38 million Local Road and MUP Rehabilitation STIP Project to improve local roads and multi-use paths (MUPs). The project is anticipated to begin in late Summer and run through the Fall.

Delays and closures will be minimized as much as possible, but as with any major project, there will be some. Plan ahead and thanks for your patience while the improvements are being made.
FOREST & FIRE MANAGEMENT

A Real-Life Experiemnt

bootleg fire
The Bootleg Fire (Oregon) gave scientists at the Sycan Marsh Preserve some unexpected data. In a vast region of wetlands and forest in remote Oregon, ecologists have spent the past decade thinning young trees and using planned fires to try to restore the thick stands of ponderosa to a less fire-prone state.

In late July when the nation's biggest burning wildfire reached the preserve, it provided them with an unexpected, real-world experiment. As the massive inferno half the size of Rhode Island roared into the Sycan Marsh Preserve, firefighters said the flames jumped less from treetop to treetop and instead returned to the ground, where they were easier to fight, moved more slowly and did less damage to the overall forest.

This is great news as Mammoth Lakes prepares to be the 'donut-hole' in a landscape-scale ecological forest restoration project. The 55,000 acre project, completely surrounding the Town of Mammoth Lakes, is known as the Eastern Sierra Climate and Communities Resilience Project. Over the next several years, the project aims to return natural processes to the declining forest landscapes surrounding Mammoth Lakes and put the Eastern Sierra on the path to achieving regional resilience.
CLIMATE CHANGE

No Snow

sierrasnow_tmo_2021188
Mountain snow is like a bank account for water across the western United States. Snow that falls on the Sierra Nevada, the Rocky Mountains, and other ranges becomes a natural reservoir that slowly melts each spring and summer and flows down into the river valleys. The resource managers of western states count on this allowance from nature to fill reservoirs with sufficient water for the typically dry months of summer and autumn. In 2021, those meltwater accounts have been turning up “insufficient funds.”
