REDS MEADOW - RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT

Over the course of the next 2-3 years, Reds Meadow Road will be reconstructed to greatly improve public access and traffic safety, reduce the likelihood of vehicular accidents, and shorten emergency response times. Reds Meadow Road currently has insufficient width, structurally deficient pavement, poor settlement and drainage, and substandard sight distances coupled with narrow shoulders and roadside hazards. Due to the constant need for repair on  this heavily-used, and deteriorating road, flooding and other weather events, along with the small windows of time in which to repair it, the forest has struggled to maintain it. Reconstruction will provide a more permanent solution for public safety and future maintenance.

Beginning September 18 closures will be implemented as follows:

  • Full Closure (emergency and maintenance traffic only): Monday through Friday, 24 hours a day, weekly until the end of the work season.

  • Saturday and Sunday the road will be open to public.

  • DAY USERS: The road will be closed by official closure order during the day due to the contractor blasting rock. Do not attempt to hike or bike the road or the Starkweather Trail. The blasting will impact the trail and it will not be safe to take.

  • The ESTA shuttle service ends on September 10.

  • USFS CAMPGROUNDS will close on September 17.

Upon completion of the project, the Town of Mammoth Lakes (TOML) will be issued a Highway Easement Deed that authorizes maintenance responsibility for transportation purposes of the road. This action will provide the TOML jurisdiction for transportation purposes only, as ownership of the road will remain with the Inyo National Forest.

Please pack your patience and be prepared for traffic delays. Check both Devils Postpile National Monument and Inyo National Forest websites for information before you plan your trip so you can make an informed decision about your visit.
