MEASURE R IMPROVEMENTS AT MAMMOTH CREEK PARK WEST

Since 2015, nearly $2,000,000 in Measure U Programming Grants have been awarded to local organizations serving over 100,000 locals and visitors. Measure U is a Town of Mammoth Lakes Special Tax specifically for arts & culture, mobility, and recreation, which MLR is the appointed recommending body for expenditures.

Each January, MLR accepts applications for Measure U Programming Grants. In February, the MLR Allocations Committee collectively spends hundreds of hours reviewing applications, meeting with applicants, and determining funding recommendations. In March, the 3-person Allocations Committee, through the public hearing process, presented their Measure U programming grant recommendations to the MLR Board. This process allows the full MLR Board to hear from applicants and the public before making recommendations on the expenditure of these tax dollars. The Board voted to move the recommendations forward to the Town Council, which was approved! MLR is appreciative of the opportunity to support the use of these tax dollars for programming in our local community which greatly enhances and enriches our lives. Overall, $181,325 was recommended between nine (9) programming applications and $25,000 for one (1) Special Project.

Through this public process, MLR was also able to move forward to the Town Council the recommendation for a large climbing boulder at Mammoth Creek Park West. $350,000 in Measure R funds were recommended and approved to purchase and install the 1,100 square-foot prefabricated climbing boulder. The MLR Board felt this would be a great community asset serving all ages, providing a healthy, FREE of cost, outdoor activity to introduce the unfamiliar to rock climbing, and offer training and mentorship opportunities to those already involved in the sport. The Parks and Recreation Department will also be able to use the boulder to offer introductory rock climbing camps to younger children, an option previously not available.

Thank you to Measure R for continuing to enhance the Town of Mammoth Lakes!
