Song and Wind – A Project for Music Students
(March 31, 2021) –
Here is a message from our friends at Eastern Sierra Symphony…..
“The Eastern Sierra Symphony (ESS) extends our warmest wishes and seasons greetings to all of our beloved audience members and kind supporters. We have missed you all and we look forward to the day when we can once again share our mutual love of live music and fellowship with you.
While we were not able to present our annual Sierra Summer Festival in 2020, we have indeed done our best to continue to grow music in Mammoth Lakes. With the generous support of Measure U through our partners at the Town of Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Lakes Recreation and our long-time donor, Ann Horton, and other private donors, we launched our “ESS Song and Wind” project for the music students of Mammoth Middle and Senior High Schools. Through this program, the Eastern Sierra Symphony is partnering with the Mammoth Lakes Public Schools’ Music department to give high quality music education to the students of Mammoth Lakes during this period of Covid- 19. Mr. Hammers, the director of the Music Department, is solely in charge of teaching all woodwind, brass, percussion, and voice students in the Mammoth Lakes school district. ESS is in the unique position, with its world-class musicians, to assist and supplement Mr. Hammers’ efforts. ESS has, in its mission statement, music education as one of its core goals. “ESS Song and Wind” is a natural extension of the programs that have already been in place and is providing stability and continuity to the students and to Mr. Hammers during this difficult time. The students are having multiple lessons and classes per week via on-line streaming platforms, all to supplement and reinforce Mr. Hammers’ planned syllabus. The program is proving to be so successful that ESS hopes to be able to continue after the present situation resolves. Since the beginning of October, our professional coaches have provided over 80 hours of live on-line instruction to the students of the Concert and Symphonic bands, the Jazz Ensemble and the Choir. The Eastern Sierra Symphony is proud to be affiliated with Mammoth Schools music instructor Michael Hammers and his wonderful students, and we look forward to continuing “ESS Song and Wind” throughout the school year and into the future.
In the meantime, the Eastern Sierra Symphony asks all of our audience and community members to stay safe and be well. We look forward to being with you again as soon as it is safe to do so.”
