Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Cory Gardner (R-CO) have introduced a bipartisan bill that requires that the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) to measure outdoor recreation’s impact on the U.S. economy.

An independent study produced by the Outdoor Industry Association has been gaining a lot of attention over the past couple of years for discovering that outdoor recreation provides $646 billion to the U.S. economy every year and supports 6.1 million jobs.

This is great news, and I can’t help but think of the Ken Burns documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” where Dayton Duncan expresses how by simply being an American, you– all of us– own these natural parks and wildernesses. Being in the outdoors, and preserving the outdoors is an essential part of the American spirit and democracy at its best.
